2008 Ford Focus Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove, inspect, and install camshafts in 2.0L zetec-e engine on 2008 Ford Focus?
A: To do that, first, it is necessary to remove camshaft sprockets; before refitting of those, their positions should be marked. All bearings caps are marked uniquely, with exhaust bearing caps labeled 0-4 and the intake bearing caps labeled 5-9 to be fitted back on in the original positions with the marked side outwards. Unthread the camshaft bearing cap bolts gradually to take off the pressure from the valve springs; the camshaft bearing caps will be marked and have dowels; with the help of these, withdraw the camshafts and the oil seals used in them. When assembling cam followers, employ clean containers in order to prevent swapping of the parts as this will result in more wear. Analyze the camshaft and cam followers surface for signs of wear, measure On home of the cam follower, by calipers and compare the OD of each follower for tapering and ovality. Valve clearances may need adjustment if any of the parts of the valve make any noise. Camshaft lobes should also be inspected for damage and the bearing journals analyzed for signs of wear, a machine shop may be consulted. Check and measure journal diameter and bearing journal running clearance by using Plastigage if they are worn out replace them. For camshaft end play, use a dial gauge after taking the necessary from the bearing journlists. When installing the engine turning the engine back from TDC is done, other applications are oiling of the cam follower bores and the cam followers and correct placement. After the caps have been tightened, new camshaft oil seals need to be installed and the bearings need to be lubricated and the camshafts need to be aligned properly. Coat the bearing caps with sealant, then, engage them in the proper sequence with the prescribed amount of torque and remove any excess sealant. The camshafts should be set to TDC on the Number 1 cylinder before the installation, and the sprockets must be put in place while tightening the bolts loosely before examining the check valve clearances. Lastly, do the reassembly and set and adjust the timing belt as well as the valve timing.
