- Q: How to remove and install the intake manifold in 4.0L SOHC V6 engine on 2001 Ford Explorer?A: For the removal of the components from the models of 1997 to 2000, unbend the negative terminal of the battery and then the drive belt. Next, remove the upper intake manifold, first, you must release fuel system pressure if you are disconnecting fuel related parts. Next, and depending on the engine, you have to unscrew the valve covers, simultaneously, the cooling fan and its shroud. Next, undo the lower intake manifold bolts and raise the manifold up; if it is tightly stuck on, then give it a few gentle whacks with a soft-face hammer to break the gasket seal, but do not pry with the gasket as the manifold is plastic. During installation, install instruction requires you to clean away all the old gasket material and clean the oil and dirt using a cloth and solvent. Slide new O-ring gaskets over each of the six intake runners while they are in the intake ports and no sealant is needed. Place the manifold in position over the cylinder heads, aligning the bolt holes, and fit the bolts-tighten them enough to just snap them in place but do not turn them further as this will make the manifold move and distort the O-ring seals which we have just fitted. When tightening the bolts, should be started from the middle part and move towards the two extremes while completing the procedure for the removal of the connectors in reverse order. Last but not the least; start up the engine and look for signs of oil, coolant along with vacuum leaks. In the case of models from 2001 and later, the removal and installation may not be as described above.
