2001 Ford Excursion Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install rear Crankshaft Seal in diesel engine on 2001 Ford Excursion?
A: Rear seal has to be unbolted and bolted in with the help of the Rear Crank Service Set (Special Tool No T94T-6701-AH) due to required centering during installation, which is necessary to prevent leaking and subsequent wearing of the crank shaft and seal. It is advisable to start with the removal of the transmission, then come to the flywheel or the driveplate and then the rear cover, but make sure that you do not lose the dowel pins. Subsequently, unscrew the crankshaft rear oil seal retainer bolts, and the oil seal retainer; clean any sealant from the retainer; and, finally, remove the wear sleeve from the crankshaft. In case of installation steps, it is recommended to apply RTV silicone sealant on the seal retainer before fixing the new rear seal, which comes with wear sleeve as a single unit. Install this assembly using special tools while placing it at the crank shaft and fasten it with the five seal retainer bolts. For 6.0L and 6.4L engines the process starts in the same way as the flywheel/driveplate and front adapter must be removed but special attention should be paid to the dowel pin and crankshaft rear flange bolts should not be pulled out. Turn the sheet metal screws to remove the seal, use soapy water to lubricate the outside edge of the new seal and then use a large socket and hammer to fit the new seal. If the engine has an original seal, the wear ring should be withdrawn using a specialised tool, the crankshaft and seal bore should be cleaned, and when replacing with new parts a new seal and the wear ring should be in one set, the lip of the new seal should be lubricated before positioning and installation. The rest of the procedure is the mirror image of the removal of the installation.
