  • Q: How to replace a rear Crankshaft Seal in a 3.0L V6 engine on 2000 Ford Ranger?
    A: Remove the transmission, and for vehicles with manual transmission, take out the clutch assembly. Next, remove the flywheel/driveplate. Using a sharp awl, carefully punch one hole into the Crankshaft Seal between the lip and the engine block, ensuring not to scratch the crankshaft. Screw in the threaded end of a slide hammer, or an equivalent tool, to pull the seal out. If a special tool is unavailable, you may carefully pry out the old seal with a screwdriver, taking care not to nick or scratch the sealing surfaces. Thoroughly clean and inspect the Crankshaft Seal area, then lubricate the new seal with engine oil. Start the seal into its recess with the spring side facing the engine, and press it into place using a special tool or by tapping it in with a hammer and hardwood drift or a section of appropriate size plastic pipe, working slowly around the seal until it is flush with the rear face of the block. Install the flywheel/driveplate, and complete the installation in reverse order of removal. Finally, run the engine and check for leaks.
