1999 Ford Ranger Piston Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What are the steps involved in inspecting and preparing piston/connecting rod assemblies before engine reassembly on 1999 Ford Ranger?
A: Before the body of the inspection process can though be performed, the piston/connecting rod assemblies should be washed, and the original piston rings must be taken out of the pistons with new piston rings always being incorporated each time. Using the piston ring installation tool, take out the rings off the pistons without scratching the side of the rings. After most of the carbon has been removed from the top of the piston use a hand held wire brush or fine emery cloth to remove all traces of carbon Finally never use a wire brush mounted in a drill motor as this will erode the piston material which is relatively soft. Carbon should be cleaned from the ring groove, preferably by a piston ring groove cleaning tool or a piece of broken ring, but should not detach any metal or harm the groove. Upon cleaning, the piston/rod assemblies should be wiped down using solvent only and then blow off along the desired direction of movement using compressed air with blows on the polished sur faces of the connected pistons and rods ; the passages of the assembled oil return holes must also be free of obstruction. If the pistons and cylinder walls are not badly scored and the engine block is not rebored new pistons are not necessarily in order unless new piston rings are required in which case new pistons would be required anyway. Every piston must be examined for the lack of or cracks, scoring, scuffing, deep holes or burned regions; all of them can tell about overheating or abnormal combustion which must be examined in the cooling and lubrication systems. Pitting a form of corrosion indicates leakage of coolant into the combustion chamber or crankcase, in such case, it is necessary to correct or eliminate such problems in the rebuilt engine. Check the piston ring side clearance by using a new piston ring and a feeler gauge at least at four positions in the groove, and be sure to use correct rings for each groove; in case of over limit, new pistons will have to be installed. Piston-to-bore clearance should be checked, the bore as well as the piston diameter should be measured and matched and the clearance calculated; if outside set limits, the block must be rebored, new pistons and rings fitted. The piston-to-rod clearance can be checked by trying force to twist the piston and the rod in the opposite direction if there is a notable free play this will be interpreted to be worn and has to be rectified whereby often the procedure will involve resizing the piston and the new pins on a new automobile machine. If pistons are to be removed from connecting rods, such should also be taken to the machine shop for checking bend and twist. Connecting rods' condition can be evaluated temporarily removing rod caps, cleaning the bearing surfaces and looking for nicks or scratches; then putting old bearings in their place and having caps fitted loosely. When rebuliding due to connecting rod knock new rods should be fitted.
