- Q: How to remove and install the flywheel and clutch in SOHC four cylinder engine on 1999 Ford Ranger?A: Remove the transmission, then take off the pressure plate and clutch disc from the rear of the flywheel for manual transmission models. Lock the flywheel/driveplate using a large screwdriver meshed with the starter ring gear and remove the six bolts securing the flywheel to the crankshaft, ensuring to remove the bolts a quarter turn at a time in a diagonal and progressive manner. Mark the mating position of the flywheel/driveplate and crankshaft flange before removing the flywheel. If needed, remove the engine rear cover plate bolts and ease the rear cover plate over the two dowel pins to take it off. If the flywheel ring gear is badly worn or has missing teeth, it should be replaced by an automotive machine shop. Check for cracks and other damage. The installation of the flywheel/driveplate and clutch follows the reverse of the removal procedure, with the addition of applying oil-resistant sealer sparingly to the bolt threads and tightening the mounting bolts to the specified torque.
