1998 Ford Ranger Transfer Case Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the front output shaft Transfer Case Seal on transfer cases on 1998 Ford Ranger?
A: The following procedure applies to 1997 and earlier models that do not utilize a CV joint at the transfer case yoke. For 1998 and later models, if the front output shaft seal is leaking, it must be serviced by an authorized repair facility as the transfer case requires disassembly. Begin by raising the vehicle and securely supporting it on jackstands, then drain the transfer case lubricant. Remove the front driveshaft from the axle input yoke and tie it up out of the way. Use a flange holding tool or chain wrench to hold the yoke, then remove the front output shaft nut, washer, rubber seal, and yoke. Remove the dust seal from the yoke opening of the transfer case and carefully pry out the oil seal with a large screwdriver. Inspect the oil seal contact surface on the housing for any scoring or burrs that may damage the new oil seal, and if found, remove them with emery cloth or medium grit wet-and-dry sandpaper. Clean the area with a cloth dipped in solvent to remove any sanding residue. Apply multipurpose grease to the oil seal, position it into the front output shaft housing bore ensuring it is not cocked, and drive it into place using a special tool or a hammer with a large socket or piece of pipe. Clean the transfer case front output female splines and apply multi-purpose grease before inserting the front driveshaft splined shaft into the female splines. Install the front yoke onto the splines, followed by the rubber seal, steel washer, and nut, tightening the nut to the specified torque. Reconnect the front driveshaft to the axle input yoke, refill the transfer case lubricant, and finally remove the jackstands to lower the vehicle.
