1998 Ford Ranger Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to adjust the Shift Cable on 1998 Ford Ranger?
A: Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Have an assistant position the column sh selector lever in the Drive Overdrive position if equipped with Overdrive, or in Drive if not, and hold it in place during adjustment. If working alone, hang a three-pound weight on the gear selector lever. Working under the vehicle, pull down on the lock tab on the shift cable and remove the fitting from the manual shift lever ball stud with a screwdriver. Position the transmission manual shift lever in the Drive Overdrive (or Drive) position by moving the bellcrank lever all the way to the rear, then forward three detents (or two for non-Overdrive models). Connect the cable end fitting to the manual lever ball stud and push the lock tab all the way down to lock the cable in the correctly adjusted position. If used, remove the weight from the gear selector lever. After adjustment, check for Park engagement; the control lever must move to the right when engaged in Park. Check the control lever in all detent positions with the engine running to ensure correct detent/transmission action and adjust if necessary. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle to the ground. Test drive the vehicle slowly at first to ensure the adjustment is correct.
