1997 Ford Ranger Exhaust Manifold Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the intake manifold and exhaust manifold on the DOHC four cylinder engine in the 1997 Ford Ranger?
A: To remove the linkage for the intake manifold, the preliminary measures are to take off the negative cable of the battery and pinch and then remove the coolant hose. Remove the throttles body cover, disconnect the hose on the side of the throttle body, and at the air cleaner housing. Remove the throttle cable(s) from the throttle control linkage and cable bracket on the intake manifold; the TP sensor electrical connector from the throttle body. Then, remove electrical connections from MAP, IAC, etc and also safety connectors of all hoses and clips; it is advisable to pull out fuel system pressure before disconnecting fuel supply hose. This requires the removal of the bolt for the EGR tube bracket and the EGR tube flange and the separation of the large 42 pin harness connector which should then be put to one side. Remove any other brackets, hoses or connectors which may hinder the removal of the manifold, after which the five bolts that hold the intake manifold shall be undone to have the manifold removed. For installation, look for the condition of the manifold gasket and replace it if need be bearing in mind the surfaces should not be cleaned with metal scraper or any abrasive material and the torque specified for installation should be observed. First of all one has to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery and evenly lift the car on safety jack stands. Loosen the exhaust pipe-to-exhaust manifold nuts if necessary with penetrating oil then, get rid of as much of the cooling system as possible and get rid of the drivebelt. Remove the upper clamp and detach the upper radiator hose, the hose going to the expansion tank, then, unbolt the AC compressor without removing the refrigerant. Disconnect the heater hose, remove the engine oil dipstick and its tube as well as the coolant pipe. After that turn the right front wheel lug nuts half clockwise, lift the car again remove the wheel and the right inner fender splash shield. Disconnect the cables connected to the alternator, take out bolts between the lower accessory drive bracket, refit the wheel and lower the vehicle. Six mm nuts holding the upper accessory drive bracket should be loosened and the bracket then pulled out. Loosen the exhaust manifold nuts and take off the manifold along with its gasket.. In installation, clean the surfaces of mating and check the exhaust manifold for crack or warpage, then install a new gasket and tighten wheel lug nuts in accordance with the prescribed torque specifications.
