1994 Ford Ranger Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install Timing Cover in DOHC four cylinder engine on 1994 Ford Ranger?
A: To remove the components, kick off the negative terminal of the battery. Next, loosen and then remove the crankshaft pulley bolt, after that, the CKP sensor electrical connector which is close to the crankshaft pulley is disconnected and the wiring harness is moved away from the Timing Cover by removing the retainers. Following that, you should unbolt the CKP sensor, with the import note that every time this sensor is changed a new one must be used because it comes with a special alignment tool needed for the instalment. Next, take out the drive belt and the tensioner and, further, the water pump pulley. Undo the electrical connector to the power steering pressure switch which is present at a high pressure hose in the power steering system then step down the single bolt at the lower left corner of the power steering pump and shift the pump. If fitted, the cooling fan drive pulley can be removed with a three jaw puller or it can be left in service if the Timing Cover is not to be removed. Beside this, there is a mounting bolt for the Timing Cover with which one of the pulley holes is provided. Last but not the least, screw out all the bolts and then pull out the Timing Cover. For installation, reverse the removal steps and make sure that the cooling fan drive pulley is fitted to the front of the engine with flat washers, a bolt and a nut and then use wrenches to tighten the nut on to the bolt to tighten the pulley to the cover. The mating surfaces should be cleaned gently to prevent surface scratch, the Timing Cover should be fitted within four minutes after a 2.5mm bead of silicone sealant has been applied. Torque all bolts to the appropriate setting listed in the specs, while ensuring that the three-stage pattern is adhered to and re-time the engine, and when installing the crankshaft position sensor, ensure the use of the particular tool for alignment.
