1994 Ford Ranger Piston Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the piston and connecting rod assemblies on 1994 Ford Ranger?
A: Before disassembly of the piston/connecting rod assemblies the cylinder head(s), oil pan, and the oil pump must have been taken off. Run your finger nail on the rod and feel for any ridge at the top end of the ring travel about 3/8 inch below the top of each cylinder. If ridges due to carbon deposits or cylinder wear are there then they have to be eliminated with a particular tool as prescribed by the manufacturer. If not done, there might be breakages of the piston, for this reason: Following the removal of the cylinder ridges, the engine is flipped, with the crankshaft vertical upwards. Before the connecting rods' removal, inspect the endplay with feeler gauges; the play should be equal to the thickness of the feeler gauges used. If in the endplay, there is beyond service limit, certainly the new connecting rods will be required. If new rods or a new crankshaft has been fitted, the endplay may decrease to a level lower than the specified minimum and the rods will have to be machined. Look for any marks on the rods and caps, if they are not marked, then put a small center-punch and make some depressions. Turn each connecting rod cap nut clockwise as far as possible then counterclockwise One half turn to free them for removal hand Tighten nut remove no 1 connecting rod cap and bearing insert without dropping the insert. Before the piston is removed try to cover the crankshaft journal and cylinder wall with the help of a short piece of plastic or rubber hose over the connecting rod cap bolt. Push the connecting rod and the piston down toward the bottom of the engine and unscrew the bearing insert on the top of the engine and take the assembly out with wooden hammer handle by pressing on the top of the bearing. If there is any form of resistance, make sure that all of the ridges have been eradicated on the cylinder. Do the procedure above to the other cylinders. Finally, you have to re-install the connecting-rod caps and the bearing inserts into the respective rods and but loosely tighten the cap nuts so as to avoid having the bearing surface damaged accidentally. Do not disconnect pistons from the connecting rods.
