1994 Ford Ranger Flywheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the flywheel/driveplate in 4.0L SOHC V6 engine on 1994 Ford Ranger?
A: In order to eliminate the transmission, lift the car and place it on jackstands, after that, you will have to slide the transmission out. In the case of any leakage, it is recommended that the front pump seal or O-ring for transmissions with an automatic gearbox be replaced at this time. For the vehicles with manual transmission system, then you have to pull off the pressure plate and clutch disc; it will be reasonable to inspect or replace the clutch parts, and also the pilot bearing. More permanently, indentations may be made on the flywheel or driveplate and crankshaft with a center punch, or painting or other means of ensuring alignment on reassembly. Take out the bolts which fasten flywheel or driveplate to the crankshaft; if the latter rotates, insert a screwdriver between the flywheel and the rim gear to lock the flywheel to the former. Take particular attention in the removal of the flywheel or the driveplate from the crankshaft by supporting it while the last bolt is being unscrewed and noting the fact that vehicles with automatic transmission have a spacer that is fitted between the crankshaft and the plates. Scrub the flywheel and remove all the grease and oil that may be on the surface of the flywheel for signs of crack on the flywheel surface, rivet grooves, burned area and score marks which light scoring can be erased by using emery cloth. Inspect the ring gear teeth for crack or breakage and place the flywheel on a level surface and use a straight edge to check for warpage. Scrub and have a look at the flywheel or driveplate and crankshaft mounting surfaces, and if the crankshaft rear seal was leaking replace it before reassembly. Align the flywheel or driveplate with crankshaft noting that in this position would fit previously made marks, some of the engines have an alignment dowel or staggered bolt holes. After the bolts are fitted, put some thread locking compound in the threads, and literally jam a screwdriver in between the ring gear teeth to restrain movement and then tighten the bolts in correct sequence up to the torque readings. The rest of the instalment is done in the inverse order to the removal process that was described above.
