1993 Ford Ranger Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How should you reassemble Cylinder Head on 1993 Ford Ranger?
A: Again if the head was taken to an automotive repair shop for valve doing service, make sure it is washed before assembly. In the case where the head is dispatched for its valve servicing the valves as well as their counterparts will be installed. Reline and position all the valves and then place new seals on every valve stem but try not to twist or cock the seals to enable a good seated one. Remove or drop the spring seat or shim(s) over the valve guide and install the valve spring and retainer. Release the tension of the valve springs you can use a valve spring compressor to do this and very gently install the keepers into the upper groove and then very slowly release any pressure from the compressor and you will know if the keepers are seating properly. The keepers can be adjusted as required and a small dab of grease applied if the keepers need to be secured in position. Perform the same for the other valves, as far as replacing the component, it's important not to swap around the pieces and parts. Using a ruler graduated in 1/32-inch, or a dial caliper, measure the height of the installed valve spring. If the head was sent for the service work then there should be the correct height installed, but one should not take it for granted by not checking it. The measurement is from top of spring seat or shim(s) to the bottom of retainer for each of the measurement. For height adjustment if it goes higher than the figure indicated, shims can be placed under the springs, but care must be taken not to over do it and reduce the height to below that installed.
