1990 Ford Bronco II Transfer Case Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the transfer case on 1990 Ford Bronco II?
A: To remove and install the transfer case start by disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery and then jack up the car. If available pull off the skid plate and put a drain pan under the transfer case to collect the fluid after unscrewing the drain plug. Remove the 4-wheel drive indicator switch wire connector, separated front driveshaft from axle input yoke, rear driveshaft from the output shaft yoke. Take out the speedometer drive gear, and the vent hose; if possible, undo the bolts fixing the shifter to the extension housing. Once the heat shield has been disconnected, supporting the transfer case with a transmission jack, the transfer case need to be unbolting from the transmission and extension housing. Sliding the transfer case rearward and lowering it from the vehicle, the gasket can be taken off. For installation, use a new gasket to fit in between transfer case, extension housing; ensure that the transmission output shaft fits with the transfer case input shaft before retaining the bolts with the right measure of torque. Replace the heat shield, control lever, vent assembly, speedometer drive gear, and the driveshafts and make all connections meet and be tightened to the specified torque values. Last, add the drain plug and fill with DEXRON II automatic transmission fluid, bolt back the skid plate, lowering the car and lastly joining back the negative terminal of the car battery.
