1984 Mercury Capri Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Crankshaft seals in 3.3L inline six cylinder engine on 1984 Mercury Capri?
A: Starting with the process of replacing the front seal, one has to remove the radiator, crankshaft pulley and timing cover along with the coolant and the engine oil. Remove the oil seal by using a pin punch and then wash the area on the cover for the oil seal. It is possible to grease only the outside circumference of the new seal and place it with the help of specific instruments prescribed for this purpose; otherwise, a huge piece of pipe or a socket can be used, however, care must be taken not to harm the rubber seal. Make sure that the seal is in a correct position and the spring is correctly installed to its useful place. The procedure of installation is the exact opposite of the removal process. In general the rear seal is done with the engine still in the vehicle; however, if doing the rear main bearing as well as the oil seal it is necessary to pull the engine. The battery must be disconnected then the starter and the transmission must be removed. For manual you need to take out the pressure plate, the disc, clutch; for an automatic you need to take out the driveplate. All models, except the G and GH series, will require the removal of the flywheel for access, while the engine rear cover plate must also be unbolted, and depending on the model some of it may have to be disassembled for the two piece seal. To enable one-piece seal removal, one should drill two holes on the seal and screw the resultant holes with screws and then the seal can be lifted against the screw force while at the same time considering the/contact zones of the seal. Remove foreign matter in the seal recess and, using a flash light, check the crankshaft rubbing surface carefully and paint the newly wear ing oil seal and crankshaft with engine oil. Place the seal lips forward and start the seal into the cavity engaging a special drive tool and aligning it with the crankshaft. Set the rear plate of the engine and bolt up the flywheel or the driveplate and then reverse the procedure.
