The following procedure is for the models produced prior to 1997. Start by using a wrench to remove the lug nuts of the front wheels, then, use the jack to lift the front part of the vehicle and then support it using jack stands satisfactorily before removing the front wheels. Remove the nut at the base of the front driveshaft and pull it away from the axle yoke towards you-you'll have to tie it aside to clear the next part of the engine. After that, it is required to pull out the spindles together with the left and right shaft and joint assemblies. Put a transmission jack under the carrier unbolt it from the left axle arm and then take off the carrier allowing the lubricant to drain. Fasten the carrier firmly in a vise or on the workbench, rotate the shaft assembly to align the open part of the C-clip and than use the screwdrivers to remove this particular clip. Extract the slip yoke and shaft assembly from the carrier, after that, the oil seals and the caged needle bearings are pulled out with the aid of a slide hammer and puller. For fitment, first clean and visually check the bearing bore for nick and burrs, fit a new caged bearing with the manufacturer marks directed outwards. Fully insert the bearing, lubricate the oil seal with high temperature lubricant, then insert the said seal in the carrier housing. Slide in the slip yoke and shaft assembly into the carrier-the C-clip groove should be visible and the C-clip can be pushed into the groove provided using a screwdriver-be careful not to damage the C-clip. Remove gasket sealant from the surfaces of mating, spread RTV sealant all over the indicated area, 1/4 inch wide and inboard of bore, place the carrier on the transmission jack and secure in the support arm with pins that acts as guide. Loosen the bolts if necessary and then tighten them in a clockwise or counter clockwise pattern to the torque mentioned above and then install the shear bolt and tighten it to the torque mentioned above as per fixing the carrier to the axle arm. Last, properly assemble the shaft and joints with the spindles, attach the driveshaft to the yoke and pack the carrier in lubricant, after that put front wheels, drop the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the required torque.
