- A:The EGR system on 2002 and later models is a complex system used to lower NOx emission levels. It recirculates a small amount of exhaust gases into the intake manifold to lower combustion temperatures and reduce the formation of NOx compounds. There are two different systems: the Electronic Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EEGR) system for 5.0L engines and the Pressure Feedback EGR (PFE) system for 4.6L engines. The EGR valve is controlled by a solenoid and the PCM calculates the desired flow of exhaust gases. To check the EGR valve, perform a leakage test and clean the inlet and outlet ports. The EGR control system uses an Electronic Vacuum Regulator to control the amount of exhaust gas flow. Check the voltage and resistance of the EGR vacuum regulator and the EGR valve position (EVP) sensor. On 4.6L engines, check the operation of the PFE sensor.
