    Q:
How to inspect and replace the engine cooling fan on the Ford Crown Victoria? Posted by Customer
    A:
Start by disconnecting the battery cable to check the mechanical cooling fan. Carefully watch out for any leaks, deformities or grease leakage on the fan clutch assembly. Replace it if need be. Test for bearing play rocking the fan back and forth with your hand. After that, connect the battery and start the engine; let it run until it reaches normal operating temperature then turn it off. Check if there is any drag when turning the fan by hand. In case there is no drag, replace the fan clutch. Warm up the engine and see if electric cooling fan comes on. If not, check the fuse and relays. Assess its motor by directly connecting to battery terminals. Replace if necessary. This happens through loosening bolts or hex nuts before removing mechanical fans. Remove both the shroud and fan assemblies. When dealing with electric fans, you should drain system fluids first. Disconnect the electrical wires of the connector together with cooler lines of transmission. Reverse installation steps accordingly while at the same time refilling system fluids.

    Q:
How to check and replace the engine cooling fan and fan clutch on the Lincoln Town Car? Posted by Customer
    A:
The engine-driven fan is checked by inspecting the fan blades for cracks and damage, checking for symptoms of fan clutch failure such as noise, looseness, vibration, and fluid leaks, and testing for excessive bearing play by rocking the fan back and forth. The fan should turn freely when the engine is cold. If there are substantial fluid leakage or deformed bi-metal spring in the clutch assembly, or if the fan turns too easily, the fan clutch should be replaced. Removal and installation involve disconnecting the lower radiator hose and removing the fan shroud bolts to access the fan and clutch assembly. The fan clutch is loosened or unbolted from the water pump, and the drive belts are removed from the water pump pulley on some engines. The fan assembly is unbolted from the water pump, and the fan clutch can be removed from the fan blade assembly for replacement. For electric fans in later models, operation is controlled by the power train control module and relays. Continuous fan operation may indicate a fault with the relays or the coolant temperature sensor. To check the electric fan, the electrical connectors are disconnected, and voltage and ground continuity are tested at the fan connector. Removal of the electric fan assembly involves disconnecting the electrical connector and removing the fan assembly and shroud as a unit, then removing the fan blade from the motor.
