For the removal of the evaporator core in 1970 through 1981 Continental and 1970 through 1983 Mark series models, start by having the air conditioning system discharged by a professional service department. Disconnect the negative battery terminal, remove the expansion valve and suction throttling valve, and take off the liquid line support bracket. Proceed by removing the cover flange screws that attach the cover halves, then remove the left cover half to expose the evaporator core. Separate the evaporator core from the right cover half and repair or replace it as needed. For 1982 through 1987 Continental and 1984 through 1992 Mark series models, the evaporator core removal process requires removing the entire instrument panel or pulling it back sufficiently to access the heater assembly. Again, have the air conditioning system discharged by a professional service department, then disconnect the battery terminal and drain the cooling system. Remove the instrument panel, disconnect the refrigerant lines and heater hoses that go through the firewall, and proceed with the removal process. For 1981 and later Town Car models, the evaporator core removal process is similar to the 1982 through 1987 Continental and 1984 through 1992 Mark series models, where the entire instrument panel must be removed or pulled back. Additionally, when replacing the evaporator core, it's advised to replace the accumulator/drier as well. Following the removal, always install new O-ring seals and lubricate them with clean refrigerant oil before assembly. Finally, have the air conditioning system evacuated, recharged, and leak-tested by a professional service department or air conditioning repair facility.
