    Q:
How to remove and replace a power steering pump on Lincoln Navigator? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the fan and shroud and the serpentine drivebelt. If you're planning to replace the pump with a new or rebuilt unit, remove the pulley now with a pulley removal tool. Power steering pump pulley puller/installer tools are available at most auto parts stores. Remove the three power steering reservoir bolts and set the reservoir aside. Position a drain pan under the power steering pump reservoir hoses. Disconnect the power steering reservoir-to-pump hose and drain the power steering system. Plug the hose to prevent contaminants from entering. Remove the two belt deflector nuts and remove the belt deflector, if equipped. Remove the two upper pump retaining bolts. A third bolt underneath is easier to reach from underneath the vehicle. If the vehicle is equipped with air suspension, turn off the air suspension system. The switch is located in the area of the right kick panel. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Apply the parking brake. Remove the skid plate bolts and skid plate, if equipped. Unplug the electrical connector from the electronic variable orifice (EVO) power steering control valve actuator. Remove the third power steering pump bolt from the underside of the pump. Lower the vehicle. Remove the power steering pump. Disconnect the reservoir-to-pump hose and the fluid pressure line from the pump. If you removed the power steering pump pulley, inspect the spokes on the pulley for paint marks. If there are already two paint marks, replace the pulley; the two marks indicate that this pulley has already been removed and installed two times and must, therefore, be replaced. If there is one paint mark, or there are no paint marks, the pulley can be installed again. Be sure to put a paint mark on a spoke, near the hub, to indicate that the pulley has been removed and installed. Do NOT install a pulley that has already been removed and installed two times. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to tighten the three pump mounting bolts. Where the power steering pressure line attaches to the pump, install a new Teflon® seal. If you removed the power steering pump pulley, install the pulley before installing the serpentine belt. Fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid and bleed the system following the procedure described in the next. Reactivate the air suspension system, if equipped.
