Spark plug wires should be checked and replaced if necessary when installing new spark plugs. To identify bad wires, visually inspect them while the engine is running in a dark, well-ventilated garage, looking for arcing or sparks at damaged areas. Inspect the wires one at a time, starting with the spark plug for the number one cylinder, and label each wire with the correct number. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug, push it back onto the plug, and ensure a snug fit. Clean the wire with a rag and check for burns or cracks. Disconnect the wire from the distributor or coil, check for corrosion and a tight fit, and reinstall the wire. Inspect the remaining wires, ensuring they are securely fastened. If new wires are needed, purchase a set for your engine model and replace them one at a time. When installing new wires, it is common practice to also install a new distributor cap and rotor. Detach the cap from the distributor, checking for cracks, carbon tracks, and worn or loose terminals. Check the rotor for cracks, carbon tracks, corrosion, and wear. Replace the cap and rotor if damage or defects are found, applying silicone dielectric compound to the rotor tip before installing the new cap. When installing the new cap, remove and attach the wires one at a time in the same location to avoid firing order mix-ups.
