On carbureted models, the fuel filter is located at the carburetor. To replace it, start by removing the air cleaner assembly and placing rags under the fuel inlet fittings to catch any spilled fuel. On some models, the filter is mounted on the outside of the carburetor, so you'll need to loosen the screw clamp, disconnect the rubber hose, unscrew the fitting, and detach the filter. On other models, the filter is located inside the carburetor, so you'll need to hold the large fuel inlet fitting with a wrench, loosen the fitting at the end of the metal fuel line, unscrew the fuel inlet tube nut, and remove the gasket, filter, and spring. Install the new filter, gasket, and spring, secure it with the fuel inlet fitting, and tighten everything securely. For fuel-injected models, the fuel filter is located under the vehicle on the inside of either the left or right frame rail, near the fuel tank. Before replacing it, inspect the hose fittings for cleanliness and relieve the fuel system pressure. The removal process will depend on the type of fittings used. For hairpin clip fittings, spread the clip legs apart, push in on them, and detach the clip from the fitting. Then, pull the fuel hoses straight off the filter. For push connect fittings, remove the safety clip, twist the fitting to break the seal, use a special fuel line disconnect tool to release the fitting, and pull the fuel line from the filter. Inspect the fittings for damage and replace if necessary. To install the new filter, push the fitting onto it until it clicks into place. For all models, remove the filter and retainer from the bracket, remove the rubber cushion, and install the new filter with the arrow pointing toward the large open end of the retainer and in the direction of fuel flow. Finally, start the engine and check for leaks.
