    Q:
Should the Exhaust Valve and Intake Valve servicing, along with valve seats and valve guides, be performed by a professional on Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
    A:
Because of the intricacies of the job and the need to use specialized tools and equipment, that entailing reconditioning of the valves, valve seats, and valve guides known in the automobile world as valve job, should be done by a professional. A home mechanic should be capable of pulling the head, doing preliminary cleaning and wiping and then return the head to the car and deliver it to a dealer service department or an auto machine shop for the service. Performing the inspection enables identification of status of the head and valve train parts and the work as well as new parts required when dealing with an automotive machine shop. This will be done by the dealer service department or the automotive machine shop through reconditioning or replacement of the valves and valve seats, reconditioning and inspecting of the valve guides, replacing valves springs, spring retainers, rotators, and valve keepers as may be required, replacing the valve to seal with a new one and reassembly of the valved component with proper installed spring height. Also, the surface of the cylinder head gasket will be done some grinding if it has warped. Depending on professionalism of the valve job done, the head will then look as new as when it was bought. On its way back, it is necessary to clean the head once more before it is fitted onto the engine to remove any loose metal and abrasive dirt that was generated in the course of the valve grinding or in the process of surfacing the head, and to blow out all oil ways and passages with air pressure, if available, but always wearing safety goggles when using air pressure.

    Q:
Should the Exhaust Valve and Intake Valve, along with their seats and guides, be serviced by a professional on Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
    A:
Much work is involved in the overhaul of the valves, valve seats and the valve guides usually referred to as the job or v- job and should, therefore, be done professionally. Home mechanic can unbolt the heads, do preliminary washing and examination, and then reinstall them and take the heads for other service to a dealer service department or an automotive machine shop. This way the head and the valve train components condition can be estimated and the work needed and the new parts required when dealing with an automotive machine shop can be known. The dealer service department or automotive machine shop will change the valves and springs off; recondition or replace the valves and valve seats; recondition the guides; check or replace the valve springs, spring retainers and keepers as necessary; replace the valve seals with new ones ; assemble the valve components; and check that the installed spring height is correct. Also, the cylinder head gasket surface will be resurfaced if it is warped or otherwise deformed in some way. This operation when done proficiently restores the head to its factory fresh state and this is achieved through the valve job. When it comes back it must again be cleaned prior to re assembly on the engine especially after valve service or head machining because there may be metal particles and some abrasive grit which must be cleaned out using compressed air if available blow all oil holes and passages.
