Thorough cleaning of the cylinder head and valve components, followed by a detailed inspection, will enable you to decide how much valve service work must be carried out during the engine overhaul.

1. Remove the valve cover. 2. Set the Number 1 cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke. The intake and exhaust cam lobes of the Number 1 cylinder will be pointing upwards (though not vertical), allowing for clearance checks. 3. Measure the clearance between the base of the cam lobe and the shim using feeler gauges, recording the thickness of the blade required for a firm sliding fit on all four valves of the Number 1 cylinder. 4. Turn the crankshaft clockwise through 180° to check the valve clearances for cylinder Number 3, and repeat for cylinders 4 and 2 after turning the crankshaft through 180° each time. Any measured valve clearances that do not fall within the specified range must be adjusted.

Keeping a record will be helpful for future adjustments, and the required buckets can be purchased in advance once the clearances and existing bucket thicknesses are known.
