Q:
How to check and replace a thermostat in a cooling system issue on Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
A:
Before attributing a cooling system issue to the thermostat, ensure to check the coolant level, drivebelt tension, and the operation of the temperature gauge or light. If the engine exhibits prolonged warm-up times, indicating a possibly stuck-open thermostat, it is advisable to replace it with a new one. In the case of engine overheating, assess the temperature of the upper radiator hose by touch. If the hose remains cool while the engine is hot, it suggests a stuck-closed thermostat impeding coolant flow to the radiator, necessitating thermostat replacement. Conversely, a hot upper radiator hose indicates an open thermostat. For replacement, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the air cleaner air duct, and drain the cooling system. Locate the thermostat housing, loosen the hose clamp, and detach the hose. Remove the housing cover, extract the old thermostat, clean the housing and cover surfaces, and install the new thermostat with attention to proper orientation. Reassemble the components, refill the cooling system, and start the engine to ensure there are no leaks and verify thermostat functionality at normal operating temperature.
