Raise the rear of the vehicle, support it securely on jackstands, and block the front wheels. Place a floor jack under the axle adjacent to the shock absorber being removed. Raise the jack just enough to take the load off the shock absorber.

If you suspect worn or weak shock absorbers, you should raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Inspect the shock absorbers for evidence of fluid leakage. A light film of fluid is generally not a concern, but if significant leakage is observed, it's advisable to replace the shocks as a set. Ensure that the fluid leakage is from the shocks and not from another source. Also, inspect the shocks to confirm they are securely mounted and undamaged.
