On 2005 and later Expedition/Navigator models, the Transmission Range sensor is integrated within the transmission as part of the TCM, making it non-adjustable and replaceable only as an assembly. The Transmission Range (TR) sensor, located at the manual lever on the transmission, serves as an information sensor for the powertrain control module (PCM), preventing engine start in any gear other than Park or Neutral and activating the back-up lights when shifted to Reverse. If the engine starts in any position other than Park or Neutral, the TR sensor may be out of adjustment or defective, necessitating a functional check. For vehicles with air suspension, the air suspension system should be deactivated before raising the vehicle securely on jackstands. A special alignment tool is recommended for adjusting the TR sensor, but a simpler method involves turning the ignition to On, shifting to Reverse, and checking the back-up lights. If the lights activate but the engine starts in the wrong gear, the sensor is likely defective. If the lights do not activate, the shift cable should be detached, the sensor retaining bolts loosened, and the sensor adjusted until the lights come on, followed by tightening the bolts and reattaching the cable. If the back-up lights do not activate after adjustment, the circuit should be checked for faults. After adjustments, the vehicle should be lowered and, if applicable, the air suspension system reactivated. For replacement, the air suspension system should again be deactivated, the vehicle raised on jackstands, and the electrical connector from the TR sensor unplugged. The shift cable should be detached, and for certain transmission types, the manual lever may need to be removed. The TR sensor retaining bolts should be removed, followed by the sensor itself. Installation follows the reverse order of removal, ensuring the retaining screws are tightened and the sensor adjusted properly before lowering the vehicle and reactivating the air suspension system if equipped.
