Q:
How do you remove the water pump? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the water pump, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. Then, remove the engine cover and drain the cooling system. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts and remove the drivebelt. For four-cylinder models, loosen the right front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and remove the right front wheel and inner fender splash shield. Remove the water pump pulley and the bolts attaching the water pump to the engine block. If the water pump is stuck, gently tap it with a soft-faced hammer. Clean the bolt threads and threaded holes in the engine and remove all corrosion and sealant. For V6 models with 3.5L engines, remove the pump mounting bolts. For 2.7L engines, support the engine from below, remove the right front engine mount and bracket, and remove the thermostat. Remove the water pump pulley bolts and pulley, disconnect the coolant hose, and remove the water pump mounting bolts. Pull the water pump forward to disconnect the coolant inlet pipe grommet. Remove the pump gasket and the grommet from the coolant inlet pipe or back of the water pump. To install the new pump, compare it to the old one to ensure they are identical. Apply a thin film of RTV sealant to hold the new gasket in place. Mate the pump to the water pump housing and install the water pump bolts, tightening them to the specified torque. For 2.7L V6 models, remove and clean the mating surface on the front cover. Lubricate and install a new grommet into the back side of the pump. Lubricate and install a new O-ring gasket into the groove along the timing chain cover sealing surface. Verify the dowel pins are still remaining in the front cover. Install the water pump and tighten the bolts evenly, following the specified torque sequence. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal. Refill and bleed the cooling system, then operate the engine to check for leaks.
