How to check and replace a water pump on Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
    A:
When the engine is hot, you should press the upper radiator hose to check if the water pump is alright. A flashlight can be used to find leaks through weep or vent holes. At the front of the engine listen for a howling sound and then check for shaft wear. Before removing the fan, pulley and hoses, drain the cooling system by disconnecting the battery since power will be shut off. Then go ahead and take out alternator only if necessary. Seal up every surface, attach a new pump with gasket, and tighten bolts. Lastly, after reinstalling all parts, fill up your system again ensuring that belt tension is ok when starting your car and run it while checking for any leaks.

Compare the new pump to the old one and remove old gasket material. Clean the engine and new water pump gasket mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. Apply RTV sealant to the engine side of the new gasket and the gasket mating surface of the new pump. Attach the pump and gasket to the engine, threading the bolts in finger-tight. Install the remaining bolts, tighten them evenly in 1/4-turn increments, and reinstall any removed parts. Refill the cooling system and check the drive belt tension before running the engine and checking for leaks.
