    Q:
How to remove and inspect Clutch Disc,Pressure Plate,Release Bearing on Ford Expedition? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove and inspect clutch components, first, consider that accessing the clutch typically involves removing the transmission, but if the engine remains in place, inspecting and replacing worn components is recommended whenever the engine or transmission is removed unless they are new or in excellent condition. Begin by turning off the air suspension system if the vehicle is equipped with one and then securely raise it on jackstands. Remove the transmission, supporting the engine properly while it's out, either using an engine hoist from above or a jack with a piece of wood between it and the oil pan. Be cautious not to distort the oil pan to prevent oil starvation. Check for indexing marks on the flywheel and pressure plate; if absent, mark them for alignment. Loosen the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts gradually in a criss-cross pattern and remove them along with the pressure plate and clutch disc. Inspect all clutch components, including the flywheel for defects and the pilot bearing. Ensure the clutch disc has adequate lining thickness, lacks loose rivets, and is free of damage. Replace the release bearing along with the clutch disc. Inspect the pressure plate's machined surfaces and diaphragm spring fingers; replace it if damaged, and clean all components thoroughly. For self-adjusting pressure plates, pre-adjust them using a hydraulic press or seek professional adjustment if necessary. Reassemble by positioning the pressure plate on the flywheel and aligning the clutch disc with the flywheel using an alignment tool. Tighten the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts evenly in a criss-cross pattern, centering the clutch disc with the alignment tool. Lubricate the release bearing and install it, along with the clutch release cylinder if removed earlier, then reinstall the transmission and all previously removed components. Lower the vehicle, reactivate the air suspension system if applicable, and you're done with the installation.
