Q:
How to replace the oil cooler in Ford Expedition? Posted by Customer
A:
Some VB models have an engine oil cooler mounted at the lower left side of the engine block, with hoses connected to the remote oil filter. Coolant flows through the cooler from the block and back to the block. To replace the oil cooler, disconnect the oil and coolant hoses from the cooler. On 2WD models, use a 1/2-inch Allen wrench to remove the oil cooler housing from the oil filter adapter housing. On 4WD models, remove a single bolt retaining the cooler to its bracket and two bolts holding the oil line assembly on the cooler. Pull the oil cooler from the adapter on the block. If only the oil cooler is being replaced, no further disassembly is required. If the oil cooler adapter is also being removed, remove the bolts holding it to the block. Clean the block and back of the oil cooler adapter, then install the adapter to the block with a new gasket. Clean the coolant sealing surfaces of the adapter and oil cooler, and install new O-rings. Apply non-hardening thread-locking compound to the threaded tube and insert it through the oil cooler, tightening it to specifications. Complete the installation by installing a new oil filter, refilling and bleeding the cooling system, and running the engine to check for leaks.
