To inspect ball joints, clean the lower end of the steering knuckle. Have an assistant grasp the lower edge of the tire and move the wheel in and out while you observe the steering knuckle-to-control arm ball joint for any movement. If there is any movement, it indicates that the suspension ball joint(s) need to be replaced.

To raise the vehicle, place it on the ground and at normal ride height, then mark the shock absorbers in relation to the dust sleeve. Next, raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands placed under the frame, avoiding support under the differential housing or axle.

Guide the assembly into the fenderwell and insert the strut mount studs through the holes in the strut tower.

To reassemble the strut assembly, the rubber bumper and dust cover should be installed. The coil spring should be placed onto the strut, ensuring correct positioning onto the lower spring seat. The upper bearing assembly should be installed, aligning the notch on the bearing assembly with the clevis on the bottom of the strut. The damper rod nut should be installed and tightened to the specified torque. Finally, the spring compressor tool can be removed, and the strut/spring assembly can be installed.
