For gasoline engines, begin by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Next, remove the drive belt, the alternator harness clamp from the alternator stud, and disconnect the electrical connectors from the alternator. If your engine has an alternator bracket, remove its bolts. Then, remove the lower mounting bolts and separate the alternator from the engine. When installing, simply reverse the removal process: attach the alternator, connect the electricals, secure the harness clamp, place the drive belt, and finally, reconnect the battery's negative terminal.For diesel engines, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal(s). Remove the drive belt. For 2003 6.0L diesel models, take off the upper fan shroud, but for 2004 and subsequent models, remove the cooling fan. Then, disconnect the wiring from the alternator and remove its bolts to detach it from the engine. If working on the auxiliary alternator, you might need to elevate the vehicle for access. For all models, the installation process mirrors the removal. After setting up the alternator and connecting its wiring, position the drive belt and reconnect the negative terminal(s) of the battery.
