Mercury Zephyr Speedometer

The Mercury Zephyr Speedometer allows drivers to see just how fast they are going. This will help you stay within the law while boosting your confidence. The first early Mercury models featured a mechanical Speedometer that operated with a cable attached to the driveshaft. The rotating cable turned a magnet that pulled an iron cup. In turn, this made a needle sweep across a printed dial in real time. Through the 1970s and 1980s, that mechanical design was standard on the Zephyr line, much appreciated for its simplicity and direct feedback. In the 1990s, the arrival of digital technology brought about an electronic version of the Mercury and Zephyr dials. The cable was replaced by magnetic sensors which count pulses from tiny magnets on the shaft. The data is sent to a small computer which drives either an LCD readout or a motorized pointer. The new Speedometer is faster than the older unit, and it works with the odometer regardless of what Speedometer your car has. So each Zephyr is capable of accurately recording distances for modern Mercury drivers while the Speedometer stays front and center.

Mercury Zephyr Speedometer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace a speedometer according to U.S Federal law on Mercury Zephyr?
    A:
U.S Federal law mandates that the mileage on a replacement speedometer must match the mileage on the removed speedometer. To replace the speedometer, start by disconnecting the battery negative cable. Then, remove the Instrument Cluster and, if applicable, the clock reset knob and retainer. Take out the screws holding the mask and lens to the backplate and remove them. Disconnect the speedometer cable at the back of the speedometer. After removing the attaching screws, take out the speedometer from the cluster. To reinstall, place the speedometer in the backplate and secure it with the retaining screws. Apply silicone damping grease to the speedometer drive hole. Put the mask and lens back in position and secure them with the attaching screws. If applicable, reinstall the clock reset knob and retainer. Finally, install the instrument cluster and reconnect the battery negative cable.
