Mercury Zephyr Pilot Bearing

The Mercury Zephyr Pilot Bearing maintains the manual-transmission input shaft precisely centered and making contact with the Pilot Bearing for smoother spins, cutting down on friction with every gear shift. This small but important part sits in the crankshaft or flywheel to support the shaft and reduce noise, heat, and vibrations while assisting easy shifts. Steady support results in a more consistent engagement of the clutch, which increases the gearbox life. Over the years of production, two main styles were applied in the Mercury transmissions found in all Zephyr owners. The original designs had a sintered bronze Pilot Bearing bushing that rode on an oil film. Later designs commonly adopted a roller style Pilot Bearing consisting of tiny needles that rolled between inner and outer races. The outcome of both versions is similar. The bronze bushing simplifies construction and is self-lubricating. The roller Pilot Bearing will carry heavier radial and axial loads with even lower friction. The driving experience of Mercury drivers, regardless of style, ensures correct alignment because the transmission case bearing teams with the Pilot Bearing to help with the support that keeps the Mercury Zephyr drivetrain connected to the road.

Mercury Zephyr Pilot Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to install a needle roller bearing as a clutch pilot bearing on Mercury Zephyr?
    A:
A needle roller bearing is used as a clutch pilot bearing on all vehicles, except for the 2.3 L models in which this bearing must be placed directly into the crankshaft with the seal end facing the transmission, and on others bearings must be installed in the correct position. First of all, first remove the transmission, clutch, pressure plate, and disc. The bearing can be pulled out with the help of a slide hammer or with particular Ford instruments which are equipped with puller. For installation of the new bearing, apply a small amount of lithium grease on the crankshaft opening so that it does not transfer to an extent that causes slippage of the clutch. The bearing is then installed in its relevant place and lightly hammered on, using a 1 inch, 12 point socket, and an extension bar, to the crankshaft so as not to compromise on it since it will lead to a quick failure of the crankshaft. And are all over, reinstall the clutch, pressure plate and transmission.
