Mercury Zephyr Ignition Lock Cylinder

The Mercury Zephyr Ignition Lock Cylinder is the component that permits the driver to power the car and restricts its unauthorized use. This Ignition Lock Cylinder assembly fits on the steering column and accepts a special key that unlocks a built-in steering wheel lock and causes an internal switch to send battery power to the components, starter, and engine circuits. Despite the fact that the Zephyr shared the same fundamental Ignition Lock Cylinder build architecture for the Mercury builds throughout the years, the early Zephyr applied a simple tumbler that was mandated for 1970 safety rules. Since thieves could yank the Ignition Lock Cylinder and spin the switch with a screwdriver, later Mercury builds featured coded keys with embedded chips to prevent this. The idea was to make the computer check that the signal was okay before allowing fuel or spark to flow. Both designs use crisp detents for OFF, ACC, ON, and START positions, but there's an electronic handshake on the chip key variety that blocks cranking when the code is wrong. Wear could still bind the Ignition Lock Cylinder or stall the engine when contacts in the switch lose continuity. Mercury Zephyr owners should take action.

Mercury Zephyr Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the Ignition Lock Cylinder on the Mercury Zephyr?
    A:
Pull the horn pad, then unscrew the ground cable and take off the steering wheel and the column trim shroud. With an automatic transmission select the Park position for the selector lever and with a manual transmission select the reverse gear for the selector lever and set the ignition switch to RUN. Chuck a wire pin or a small drift punch ¼ inch (3 mm) diameter through the casting hole down to the middle of the Ignition Lock Cylinder housing. To take out the lock cylinder, one is required to press the wire pin while at the same time pulling it up. For installation the lock cylinder should be placed at the RUN position and the retaining pin should be pressed down before being placed as the cylinder into its housing with the interlocking washer. Twist the key until it reaches the off position so as to be able to advance the cylinder retaining pin to the hole at the cylinder housing. Activate the switch to ensure proper functioning by rotating the key through all positions and then the steering wheel, pad and column shroud were fitted and the battery ground connected.
