Mercury Mountaineer Coolant Reservoir

The Mercury Mountaineer Coolant Reservoir absorbs antifreeze as it expands and feeds it back so the cooling loop stays sealed and air-free when necessary. When excess coolant is drained into a plastic chamber, the Mountaineer Coolant Reservoir prevents any of that overflow from leaking. The reservoir is specifically intended to stop any leakage that would corrode parts or drop toxic glycol on the ground. Mercury SUV lines have seen the appearance of two designs, so the Mountaineer has employed both designs. Earlier, non-pressurized overflow versions placed the pressure cap on the radiator. At the same time, the Coolant Reservoir was very simple and applied a plastic lid that received hot coolant when there was a pressure rise and returned it when a vacuum formed during cool-down. Later pressurized expansion setups moved the pressure cap to the Coolant Reservoir, built the tank from thicker reinforced plastic, and mounted it higher than the radiator to vent excess air while keeping the fluid inside. Check the cold-engine level marks on your Mercury and prevent overheating whatever the system. When an owner of a Mercury Mountaineer makes a point of maintaining the Coolant Reservoir, the Mountaineer remains reliable, extending engine life.

Mercury Mountaineer Coolant Reservoir Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and clean the coolant reservoir on the Mercury Mountaineer?
    A:
Drain the cooling system. Disconnect the reservoir hoses by removing the spring clamps from the reservoir hoses and carefully twisting the coolant hoses off the reservoir. Plug the hose to prevent leakage. On 2006 and later models, the coolant reservoir is mounted on top of the Radiator. Remove the reservoir mounting bolts and lift the reservoir out of the engine compartment. Clean out the reservoir with soapy water and a brush to remove any deposits inside. Inspect the reservoir carefully for cracks. If you find a crack, replace the reservoir. Installation is the reverse of removal.
