The air filter cannot be cleaned. If it's dirty, replace it. For Carbureted and Central Fuel injection (CFI) models, remove the air cleaner housing cover wing nut(s) and grommet(s). After removing the cover, lift the air cleaner element out. On CFI models, lift the cover off. On carbureted models, remove the cover clips and cover. On all models, lift the element out. Check the inner sealing surface of the cover for evidence of leakage past the air filter. Place a light on the inside (clean side) of the filter and look through the filter at the light. If the light cannot be seen or if there are holes in the element, no matter how small, replace it with a new one. Clean the inner sealing surface between the air filter housing and cover. Before installing the new air filter, check it for deformed seals and holes in the paper. If the filter is marked TOP be sure the marked side faces up. To replace the crankcase ventilation filter. Complete the installation. For Multi-point fuel injection models, disconnect the air inlet hose from the air cleaner cover(models so equipped). Detach the air cleaner cover clips and remove the cover. Lift the filter element out of the air cleaner. Inspect and install. Complete the installation. If one side of the filter element is marked TOP make sure it is up.
