Mercury Cougar Differential Seal

Use this reliable, effective Differential Seal to keep lubricant locked inside your rear or front diff while blocking harmful grit from grinding the gears. Part of the Mercury range, the Differential Seal adapts as the axle moves but retains a tight fit against the rotating pinion flange, which allows constant oil pressure to cool and lubricate the ring and pinion set. Over the years, Mercury created two primary designs of Cougar axles. First, standard open-diff units get an OEM Differential Seal for daily drivers. In contrast, limited-slip packages generally use a more performance-oriented Differential Seal. This has a flanged lip and latex-coated bore to resist cocking and seal minor housing imperfections. Although these modifications have been made, the task itself has not changed, namely, to keep 75W-90 gear oil in and dirt out. If the Differential Seal becomes damaged, the fluid will leak and overheat quickly. Even though the front and rear seals are made of similar materials, they diverge in diameter and lip direction. Many times the seal can be removed without taking the front axle apart on most types of Cougar chassis. Prompt replacement will eliminate the whine, clunk, or protracted and costly gear wear found in any Mercury Cougar drivetrain.

Mercury Cougar Differential Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Differential Seal on the pinion of a Mercury Cougar?
    A:
To remove the rear axle cover, raise your vehicle and support using a jack stand. Remove the bolts and nuts holding the rear axle cover to the axle mount. Put in place the bolt for the rear mount into the lower bolt hole allowing pivot forward of the axle. Slide the driveshaft forward and let it rest on the driveshaft hoop. Take off the nuts that keep the carrier on the front mount. Slowly lowering the carrier will give access to the companion flange. Use a pinion nut removal tool or a wrench and socket to get rid of it. Get rid of the companion flange as well. A screwdriver blade should be wedged between the housing and seal, the metal flange lifted using a locking plier then seal pulled out with locking pliers. To install, use an installer drive or pipe slightly smaller than a seal. Look for burrs on mating surfaces, remove them if any with emery cloth, and put back reference marked companion flange over pinion shafts.
