Mercury Cougar A/C Compressor

The A/C Compressor in the Mercury Cougar plays a major role in activating the cabin cooling loop. It pressurizes refrigerant in such a way that heat gets pulled from air inside the car. As a result, summer drives will remain comfortably cool. On operation, the A/C Compressor picks up a low pressure vapor, compresses it into hot gas under high pressure, and sends the stream to the condenser. The flow of air here strips heat off the refrigerant, allowing the latter to cool, condense, and expand inside the evaporator. This process cools the air that comes out from the vents of Mercury models. Throughout its production run, the Cougar was fitted with two refrigerant standards by Mercury. Nevertheless, every A/C Compressor goes through the same cycle, with older R12 systems in the early models and cleaner R134a units from the early nineties on. The pumping action is similar, with R12 versions depending on mineral oil lubrication and R134a designs using a synthetic oil with updated seals that were introduced on later Cougar editions. Every unit is sized to the specific configuration. Thus, selecting an A/C Compressor starts with confirming the type of refrigerant. No matter the version, a well-functioning A/C Compressor is essential for keeping Mercury cabins cool, stabilizing Cougar temperatures, and extending component life.

Mercury Cougar A/C Compressor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and replace the A/C Compressor in a Mercury Cougar?
    A:
Ford recommends replacing the orifice tube and accumulator whenever the compressor is replaced. To remove the compressor, first have the air conditioning system discharged and disconnect the negative battery cable. Then, disconnect the compressor clutch wiring harness and remove the drivebelt. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the rear of the compressor, either by using a special tool for "spring lock" type couplings or by unbolt the lines. Make sure to plug the open fittings to prevent dirt and moisture from entering. Unbolt the compressor from the mounting brackets and lift it out of the vehicle. If installing a new compressor, follow the directions for draining excess oil. When installing, replace any O-rings with new ones made for the purpose and lubricate them with refrigerant oil. Finally, have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested by the shop that discharged it.
