Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. For 2014 and earlier models, remove the bolts from the lower steering column cover, press in on the sides of the upper cover, and separate the two covers. To remove the upper column cover, use a trim removal tool to separate it from the instrument cluster trim panel, with installation being the reverse of removal. For 2015 and later models, use a trim tool to disengage the tabs for the gap panel at the end of the column cover top panel and remove the panel. Press the sides of the column top cover in, then lift the front of the cover to disengage the fasteners and remove the cover. Remove the lower cover fasteners from the bottom of the cover, and on MKX models, pull the sides of the covers outwards until the tabs on the cover are free. On all models, lower the cover down and off of the steering column, with installation being the reverse of removal.
