The Focus features an electronic speedometer, utilizing an electronic sensor in the transaxle instead of the older cable-driven mechanical type. This sensor transmits the speed signal to the instrument panel through the engine management PCM, which also uses the signal for fuel system-related calculations. To access the speed sensor, apply the parking brake, loosen the left-hand front wheel nuts, and lift the front of the car on axle stands. After removing the left-hand front wheel and the fenderwell liner, the sensor can be found next to the right-hand drive axle at the rear of the transaxle. Disconnect the wiring plug from the top of the sensor, then use needle-nose pliers to remove the retaining pin at the base of the sensor, taking note of its installation. Carefully pull the sensor out of the transaxle, expecting some oil spillage, and recover the O-ring seal, replacing it if necessary. For installation, reverse the removal steps, ensuring to lightly oil the O-ring before placing the assembly back into the transaxle casing.
