On 2008 and later models, the manufacturer advises that all suspension and steering system fasteners requiring specific torque should be replaced with new ones whenever removed, excluding the subframe bolts. To begin removal, apply the parking brake, jack up the front of the vehicle, and support it on axle stands before removing the appropriate front wheel. Loosen the locknut on the tie-rod by a quarter-turn while holding the tie-rod end stationary with another wrench. Unscrew and remove the tie-rod end balljoint retaining nut, then use a balljoint separator tool to release the tapered shank of the balljoint from the
Steering Knuckle arm, taking care not to damage the dust cover if reusing the balljoint. Count the number of exposed threads on the inner section of the tie-rod and record this figure, then unscrew the tie-rod end from the tie-rod, counting the number of turns necessary for removal. For replacement, screw the tie-rod end onto the tie-rod by the number of turns noted during removal until it just contacts the locknut. Engage the shank of the balljoint with the steering knuckle arm and install the nut, tightening it to the specified torque while using an Allen wrench to prevent the shank from turning if necessary. Tighten the locknut on the tie-rod while holding the tie-rod end, then install the wheel and lower the vehicle to the ground. Finally, check and adjust the front wheel alignment if needed.
