Ford Bronco Camshaft Bearing

The Camshaft Bearing allows the camshaft to spin freely for proper valve timing and consistent power output. The Camshaft Bearing, which is a plain cylindrical case fed by pressurized oil, is positioned in specifically machined block bores to ensure that it doesn't touch and overheat. The basic bearing arrangement followed by the early Ford Bronco engines, as well as later generations, was applied, although two types of materials were applied. A bi-metal Camshaft Bearing has aluminum-silicone lining and steel backing for hardness and strong seizure resistance for everyday driving. In select Ford Bronco models designed for heavy-duty applications or spirited driving, a tri-metal Camshaft Bearing was automatically fitted. It features a copper intermediate layer with a soft lead-tin-copper overlay. This provides increased strength, fatigue resistance and the ability to trap grit before it scars the cam journal. For every Ford Bronco cam and its Camshaft Bearing to spin for mile after mile, no matter the type, correct oil-hole alignment, a little crush for adequate seating, and a typical 0.001 to 0.0035 inch oil clearance is all that's required.

Ford Bronco Camshaft Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to inspect and replace camshaft bearings and Camshaft on Ford Bronco?
    A:
The camshaft after coming out of the engine should be cleaned using solvent and then dried before it is examined and the bearing journals for signs of lateral wear, surface pitting or signs of seizure there are high chances that the bearing inserts in the block are also damaged and therefore the both the camshaft and bearings must be replaced. If the journals are in good condition, check them by micrometer for wear and out of round condition, to check the inside diameter of each bearing telescopic gauge and micrometer will be used. Cam journal diameter should be subtracted from the corresponding bearing inside diameter to get the bearing oil clearance, which should be compared to the specified limits; if all clearances are too big new bearings must be installed by an automotive machine shop. Also, the camshaft lobes should be inspected for signs of heat-check, fatigue cracks, scoring, chips, pits, and unequal wear; if the camshaft lobes are acceptable and the lobe lift measurements are within the maximum allowable limits, the camshaft should be reinstalled, so long the bearing journals are also satisfactory. Camshaft lobe lift can be determined with the camshaft in place or with the camshaft removed, by measuring the major and minor diameters of each lobe with a micrometer and recording and calculating the lift; if any lobe's lift is below specification then the camshaft has to be replaced. For camshaft bearing replacement, tool and skill needed are special so it is advised that the block should taken to an automotive machine shop for handling.
