  • Q: What are the cautions and procedures for removing and installing cylinder heads in V8 engine on 2014 Ford Mustang?
    A: These engines are not easy to service and a number of operations demand specific tools. On any procedure that may require timing of the chains or camshafts or in procedures where the cylinder head has to be removed, the instructions have to be thoroughly understood from the manuals and any disassembly can only be done by these special tools for the simple reason that any wrong move can severely damage the engine. It is required that the engine be cold when the cylinder head is pulled of since letting the engine stay hot will cause cone distortion of the cylinder head. The manufacturer claims that in the case of cylinder head warpage of 0.001 inch (0.0254 mm) or more, the head must be replaced. Because of constraint of space on working, the following procedure is set down according to the manufacturer's procedure, with the engine out of vehicle. This can be done on the fuel system pressure regulator, take off the cable of the negative of the battery, drain the cooling system, and if applicable, the nuts and brace of the strut tower cross brace mounting. Then, take off the valve covers, intake manifold and coolant crossover housing on 4.6L engines and then the engine and exhaust manifolds. Take off the timing chain, tensioners, sprockets and the camshafts out of the vehicle's engine. Employing the reverse of the tightening sequence, use a breaker bar to take off the cylinder head bolts, in a variety of turn by turn, 1/4 turn in the process. Raise the cylinder head(s) off the engine, use wooden mallet to free any head that is sticking to the block because of gasket materials and place the same on wooden blocks to avoid damaging the gasket surfaces. If the head sticks, use a prybar at the corners of the cylinder head-to-engine block mating surface to break the cylinder head gasket seal, however do not rip in the gasket sealing area. Take off the cylinder head gasket or gaskets for the engine; they differ by the side they are installed on and thus cannot be swapped. When disassembling and later when reassembling, new cylinder head bolts should be used in order to avoid problems such as leakage of gasket and even damage of the engine. Clean the surfaces where gaskets will be located on such parts as cylinder heads and engine blocks with gasket scraper and afterward clean with lacquer thinner or acetone. Place the shop rags over the exposed open areas of the engine so that it can help minimize on the entry of debris during repair and reassembly then use vacuum cleaner to clean up any debris that may have fallen on the cylinders. Inspect the block and head mating flanges for raise ramps, sharp edges or deep scratches and use correct size tap to clean out threads in head-bolt holes.
