2010 Ford Focus Crankshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to install a crankshaft during engine reassembly on 2010 Ford Focus?
A: Crankshaft installation is the first item of the engine assembly process if the cylinder block/crankcase and crankshaft have been perhaps cleaned, inspected, and repaired, assuming the engine to be upside down. Start by taking out the bolt of the main bearing cap and pulling out the caps and arrange in a manner that will enable correct positioning to be observed when reassembling. If the old bearing shells are available they should be removed from the block and caps and the recesses cleaned with a clean lint free cloth. Remove the running and thrust surfaces of the new main bearing shells and then clean them; an oil groove should be installed in each main bearing location in the block; Also note the Number 3 upper main bearing shell has thrust washers incorporated into it. To fit the corresponding shell to each of the main bearing cap, thus the tab has to fit in the notch and aligned with the oil holes. It is hereby suggested that the bearings be placed without hammering and no lubrication are to be applied at this stage. Scrub the bearing locations on the block and crankshaft main bearing journals and make certain the oil holes are clear. Once the crankshaft is cleaned up, lay it in position in the main bearings, cutting small pieces of Plastigage to fit on each of the crankshaft main bearing journal. Remove the mould release from the bearing surfaces of the caps and bearings, place the bearings on the caps and align the latter to their place where the arrow points towards the timing belt end. Ensure that the main bearing cap bolts are tightened to the torque wrench setting and do this one cap at the center and outwards. After that, remove all the bolts followed by lifting off the main bearing caps gently such that the Plastigage is not interfered with. Subtract the width of the crushed Plastigage on each of the journals and relate it to the scale marked on the envelope so as to obtain the main bearing running clearance which should be standard. If the clearance is not as specified, seek advise from an engine reconditioning specialist, as it will may be possible to replace the bearings or crankshaft journal reground they may needed. Clean all the main bearing journals and bearing surfaces free of Plastigage material but do not scratch, scuff or mar these surfaces. Remove the crankshaft, clean those bearing journals in the block, carefully apply a thin, continuous layer of molyb- based grease, engine assembly lubricant, or clean engine oil to the thrust washers and those surfaces also. Scrape and lubricate the crankshaft O/S seal journals and also make sure the crankshaft journals are clean before laying the crankshaft down again. The main bearing caps are to be installed and tightened properly after this; the contact surfaces are to be cleaned as well as lubricated and the arrows have to face towards the timing belt end. When the main bearing cap has been positioned properly, it is tightened to the requirement using the center cap and other bolts in concentric circles. With your hand turn the crankshaft to look for signs of bind and if the thrust washers are not worn or damaged, the crankshaft end play should be correct. Last but not the least is the crankshaft rear main oil seal carrier and fitting a new oil seal.
