2003 Ford Ranger Oil Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the oil pump in DOHC four cylinder engine on 2003 Ford Ranger?
A: The removal of the oil pump on this engine, involves the removal of the engine and the assembly is not disassembled for service, but functions as a whole unit. When the engine is out, the timing chain should be as well, and then the oil pan is to be removed as well. Then the oil pick-up mounting bolts are to be withdrawn to pull out the pick-up tube, which is tied with two mounting bolts.. The chain tensioner mounting bolt and the tensioner have to be withdrawn leaving the tensioner secured by one mounting bolt and the guide secured by two bolts but the position of the spring has to be noted. The two mounting bolts for the chain guide should also be removed so as to pull out the guide. While holding the oil pump drive sprocket with a suitable tool the sprocket bolt attaching the oil pump can be removed; letting the sprocket go then. The oil pump drive sprocket and timing chain sprocket can then be slid off the end of the crankshaft if required. The special washers should be put on either side of the sprocket again when the assembly is done so as to restore the timing of the engine if they are not put back the engine may develop a serious problem or fail to work. Following that, there are bolts on the oil pump which should be removed in order to pull out the pump. Installation is the opposite of removal where the specialist must ensure that all gaskets are replaced with new ones, tightened the oil pump mounting bolts to the required torque using the criss-cross method, filled the crankcase with oil and the cooling system with the proper kind and concentration of antifreeze, and examine for any of the oil warning lights, if any, in the instrument dash board after starting the car and allowing it to idle for sometime.
