- Q:What precautions should be taken when working with front shock absorbers, and How to remove and install on 2001 Ford Excursion?Posted by Hunter O.A:The shock absorbers are pressurized with nitrogen gas; do not attempt to open, puncture, or apply heat to them. For a 2WD model, open the hood and remove the shock absorber upper mounting nut, washer, and bushing. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle, support it securely on jackstands, block the rear wheels, and set the parking brake before removing the front wheel. Support the outer end of the axle with a floor jack, and for a 4WD model, remove the shock absorber upper mounting nut. Next, remove the shock absorber lower mounting nut and, for 4WD models, the bolt, then take out the shock absorber. Installation follows the reverse order of removal with the addition of tightening the nuts and bolts to the specified torque, installing the wheel and lug nuts, lowering the vehicle, and tightening the lug nuts to the specified torque.Answered by Ford Parts Specialist Joseph / Jun 18, 2022
