Q:
How to remove and install the Transmission Range sensor? Posted by Customer
A:
The FNR5 (5-speed) transaxle removal procedure involves placing the shift lever in NEUTRAL, raising the vehicle and removing the underbody cover. The electrical connector is then disconnected from the TR sensor, and the end of the shift cable is pried off the ball stud on the manual control lever. The manual control lever nut and lock washer are removed, followed by the manual control lever itself. The TR sensor mounting bolts are then removed, allowing for the removal of the sensor. For installation, the TR sensor is installed and the sensor mounting bolts are loosely installed. The special alignment tool is used to align the sensor before tightening the mounting bolts. The manual lever, lock washer, and nut are installed and securely tightened. The shift cable is reconnected to the manual control lever, ensuring that the manual lever is in the DRIVE position. The electrical connector is then reconnected to the TR sensor. The remaining installation steps are the reverse of removal, and after lowering the vehicle, it is important to verify that the engine will only start in PARK or NEUTRAL. For the 6-speed transaxle, the TR sensor is an integral component of the Transaxle Control Module (TCM) and cannot be separately serviced. If replacement is necessary, the entire TCM must be replaced and programmed with a factory scan tool. The removal procedure involves placing the shift lever in NEUTRAL, removing the air filter housing, disconnecting the electrical connector from the TCM, prying the end of the shift cable off the ball stud on the manual control lever, removing the manual control lever nut and lever, and removing the TCM mounting bolts. The installation process includes verifying that the manual control lever is in the NEUTRAL position, installing the TCM and tightening the mounting bolts securely, installing the manual control lever and tightening the lever nut securely, reconnecting the electrical connector to the TCM, and reconnecting the shift cable to the ball stud on the manual control lever. The remaining installation steps are the reverse of removal, and it is important to verify that the engine will only start in PARK or NEUTRAL.
