Q:
How to check and remove Brake Booster? Posted by Customer
A:
To perform an operating check on the brake system, start by depressing the brake pedal multiple times with the engine off to ensure there is no change in the pedal reserve distance. Then, depress the pedal and start the engine. If the pedal goes down slightly, the operation is normal. For an air tightness check, start the engine and turn it off after one or two minutes. Slowly depress the brake pedal several times. If the pedal goes down farther the first time but gradually rises after the second or third depression, the booster is airtight. Additionally, depress the brake pedal while the engine is running and then stop the engine with the pedal depressed. If there is no change in the pedal reserve travel after holding the pedal for 30 seconds, the booster is airtight. If a problem arises, it is recommended to have a new or factory rebuilt unit installed, as disassembly of the power unit requires special tools and is not typically performed by home mechanics. Before disconnecting the brake pedal, brake booster, or booster pushrod, remove the brake light switch and speed control deactivator switch (if equipped). In the driver's footwell, unlock the pin cover on the brake pedal arm and remove the retaining pin. Remove the washer and the brake booster pushrod. On 2010 and later models, use a 12-point, 11 mm wrench or socket to release the tabs on the one-piece clevis locking pin that connects the pushrod to the brake pedal. Remove and discard the brake booster mounting nuts, then carefully lift the booster unit away from the firewall and out of the engine compartment. Installation is the reverse of removal, using new booster mounting nuts, and testing the operation of the brakes before placing the vehicle in normal service. On 2010 and later models, install the brake booster pushrod before installing the brake light switch and speed control deactivator switch (if equipped), being careful not to move the brake pedal during installation to avoid damaging the switch.
